Questions about the Tactonom Reader

How do I update?

1

Check internet connection

First check if the Tactonom Reader is connected to the WLAN or a network cable.

To check the WLAN connection, go to: Settings/ System/ Check WLAN connection and confirm this with Enter.

You should now hear the name of the connected WLAN network. If you hear the prompt: “Not connected”, first connect the Tactonom Reader to a WLAN, or a wired network.

2

Perform update

Go to “Settings/ System/ Check for update” and confirm this with Enter.

When you hear the message “New updates have been downloaded…”, restart the device.

Go to “Power Off.” in the menu. When the Tactonom Reader has completely shut down, restart it by pressing the Dishonor button. Perform the update steps again to check if more updates are available.

Use of
Tactonom Reader

My finger is not recognized accurately.

This may be due to slipping of the graphics, external light effects, or dirt on the camera lens. Please do not place the system near external light sources (e.g. sun). Periodically wipe the camera lens carefully with a soft, dry cloth and reload the graphics after any slippage.

Please also pay attention to the position of your finger and feel the graphics with the following tactile strategy: To trigger the finger detection, please stretch one finger in the direction of 12 o’clock. Keep your hand at a right angle to the keyboard if possible. After triggering the finger recognition, touch the graphics again with all fingers.

Please always feel the graphics from the front and never from the side.

Also note that colored nail polish can impair finger recognition.

The graphic can't be read.

The system says that the graphic cannot be opened. In this case, it is a graphic that is not yet in the internal memory of the device. The Tactonom Reader tries to get it from the Internet, but it is not connected to the Internet. Please connect to the Internet or download the graphic as an archive from www.problind.org and read it in via USB stick.

If the graphic is already in memory, another cause may be that the QR code is corrupted. In this case, print the graphic again.

The edited version of my graphic can't be read.

Whenever you change a graphic, please remove the old version via Settings/General/”Delete file from temporary storage”. Then reload via “new page”.

The markers can't be found.

When reading in a graphic, the camera’s view of the markers must be unobstructed. In this message, the named marker was obscured by the hand or other objects. Please reload the graphic.

Alternatively, the position of the camera arm might not be ideal. Please carefully adjust the angle of the camera arm.
Please also make sure that external light sources do not affect the touch surface.

The QR code can't be read.

Please check if the QR code is undamaged. If the QR code is damaged, the graphic must be printed out again. Alternatively, only the QR code can be printed out and stuck onto the graphic. In this case, make sure that the QR code has the identical size. Do not attach the code with scotch tape, as this can restrict readability.

Please check the print image of the Tactonom Reader. This must be identical to the image in the online database www.problind.org. When printing, make sure that you do not print from the browser, but from Inkscape. Otherwise the image may have been reduced by the browser and cannot be recognized by Tactonom Reader. Printing must be at 100% and borderless.

Please do not print swell paper with an inkjet printer. The result is too blurred. Please always print with a laser printer.

Please do not print DIN A3 graphics in DIN A4 and then enlarge them to DIN A3 with a copier. Doing so may distort the graphic and it will not be recognized by Tactonom Reader.

The system only says 'The file'.

This is an announcement error of an old software version. Actually, the announcement should read: ‘The file associated with this QR code could not be loaded.’

In addition, please download the current language version. This can be found at the last entry in the system submenu. System: Update language files

Questions about audio-tactile graphics

I have no way to print graphics. Where can I get them?

You can purchase graphics through our shop at www.tactonom.com/shop.

Can I print my graphic from the browser?

The graphics downloaded as PDF can also be printed from the browser. Make sure to print the file borderless and in 100% original size.

In the case of graphics downloaded in SVG format, this leads to distortion during printing and the graphic is not recognized. These graphics may only be printed directly from the graphics program.

Does the Tactonom Reader support braille printing?

Braille graphics are also available on the Tactonom Reader. The prerequisite is that it was created in ProBlind format and uploaded to the “Share” database.

Each graphic is printable in both a swell and Braille version. For Braille printing, select the download for “Braille Embossing Printing”. Select your Braille printer from the drop-down menu and check the Braille look of the graphic in the preview.
The downloaded file can then be printed. You will need stickers from our linking set for braille print graphics. (www.tactonom.com/product/verlinkungs-set-fuer-brailledruck-grafiken)
Stick 4 markers and a QR code on the Braille graphic. Position the markers in the four round shapes in the corners, the QR code in the square shape at the top right.

Place the graphic on the Tactonom Reader. Select “New Page” from the main menu. The Tactonom Reader recognizes that the QR code must be linked to the associated digital file in the “Share” database. That's why the Tactonom Reader automatically queries the database (internet connection required) which graphics have been downloaded "for Braille embossing" within the last 60 minutes. Use the “Next” and “Back” keys to select the correct graphic and confirm the selection with the “Enter” key. Now this QR code works on all systems.
